Elon Musk launches his new AI Grok

Elon Musk recently launched a new artificial intelligence called "Grok". Grok is presented as an alternative to ChatGPT, a popular model of generative artificial intelligence.

This AI, developed by his start-up xAI, was announced shortly after an artificial intelligence summit in London where Musk was present. It's a chatbot, or conversational robot, developed by xAI, a start-up founded in July 2023 by Elon Musk. The company brings together engineers and scientists from a variety of backgrounds, including major technology companies such as Microsoft, Google and OpenAI.

Musk had previously voiced concerns about the potential dangers of AI, and even announced his intention to launch Truth GPT, an AI purporting to tell only the truth. With Grok, he seems to be continuing his efforts to influence the AI field, offering a new generative model that connects in real time to X (formerly Twitter).

On Wednesday, Elon Musk announced his new company xAI, which he presents as aiming to understand the true nature of the universe.

Grok, the first technology to emerge from Elon Musk's new AI company, xAI, is inspired by "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". According to a statement from xAI, Grok is supposed to have "a bit of wit", "a rebellious streak" and is designed to answer "prickly questions" that other AIs might avoid.

The term Grok was coined by Robert A. Heinlein in his 1961 science-fiction novel "Stranger in a Strange Land". In the book, 'grok' is a Martian term with no direct translation into Earth language. Critics have debated the exact definition of the word, but have agreed on a version of empathy or deep intuition with something. Merriam-Webster defines it simply as a transitive verb meaning "to understand deeply and intuitively."

Grok also has access to X's data, which xAI claims gives it an advantage. On Sunday, Musk posted a side-by-side comparison of Grok answering a question versus another AI bot, which he said had less current information.

However, xAI clarified in its statement that Grok, like any other large language model, or LLM, "can still generate false or contradictory information."

Currently in a limited test phase, Grok should soon be available to Premium+ subscribers of X, formerly known as Twitter.

The X Premium+ subscription was announced last week. For 16 $ per month, it offers access to all of X's Premium features, as well as eliminating ads from the timeline. Subscribers will also have access to Grok, which features unique characteristics compared to other chatbots such as ChatGPT.

The CEO of Tesla and Space X seems to be positioning xAI as a challenge for companies such as OpenAI, Inflection and Anthropic.

In an initial round of testing based on college-level math problems and Python coding tasks, the company said Grok outperformed "all other models in its computational class, including ChatGPT-3.5 and Inflection-1". It was outperformed by bots with larger data stores.

"In some important respects, it's the best out there right now," Musk said in a post on X on Friday before Grok's announcement.

Elon Musk's initiative with Grok is part of a wider context of innovation and debate around artificial intelligenceThis is an area where various players are seeking to develop technologies that are both powerful and ethically responsible.

The company's self-declared mission is to build artificial intelligence "to advance our collective understanding of the universe". Musk has previously stated that he believes today's AI creators lean too far towards "politically correct" systems. xAI's mission, she says, is to create AI for people of all backgrounds and political views.

X is also working to cut off access to its API for other generative AI projects, notably OpenAI, with which Musk has personal grievances. As a result, Grok and other X AI projects will be among the few to have full access to all X information.

However, X has lost ground as a key platform for news discussion, due to Musk's various changes, which have included a series of updates designed to undermine traditional media. As a result, many journalists are migrating to other platforms.

While X has 244 million daily active users, few of them actually publish in the application. According to X, 80 % of its users are in "read-only" mode. This means that the 100 million unique publications per day come from 49 million users.
